Purrrrrfect Valentine’s Day for tender loving tigers at Drayton Manor Zoo
Mon, 08/02/2016 - 13:48
Keepers at Drayton Manor Zoo are preparing for a wild Valentine’s Day as its pair of critically endangered Sumatran tigers simply can’t keep their paws off one another!
With their strong muscles, stunning stripes and affectionate attitudes, it was lust at first sight for Dua and Dora who have not been able to get enough of each other since they first met in February 2015.
When the pair were introduced to the park, feisty female Dora needed no encouragement to entice her new male companion and it seems now she’s got her claws into her man she has no intention of letting him go!
The Zoo takes conservation seriously and has moved both Dua and Dora across the oceans to be together! As part of The British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA) the family owned park works closely with zoos across the UK undertaking significant work in the field of animal welfare, conservation, education and research. With less than 400 Sumatran tigers left in the world and the species classified as critically endangered on the IUCN conservation red list, it’s more important than ever for the team to encourage their breeding.
“It’s clear to see the love that these two have; they always make time for each other and appreciate the little things in life to keep the spark alive! They’re not afraid to show PDA’s and enjoy a bit of rough and tumble which we think is the secret to their happiness” said Alan Carter, Head Keeper at Drayton Manor Zoo.
Staff at the Zoo are hopeful that the amorous lovers’ will soon produce a cub.
Alan added, “We’re all keeping our fingers crossed for the pitter patter of tiny tiger paws and the team here has been doing all it can to encourage their mating; from setting up romantic twilight dinners to playing love songs into their enclosure!”
The public can see Dua and Dora, along with over 100 other animal species, when the Zoo and Europe’s only Thomas Land™ attraction* re-open for the upcoming half-term holiday, Saturday 13th to Sunday 21st February 2016. They will also be open for two special Thomas & Friends™ Weekends taking place on 27th and 28th February and the 5th and 6th March, ahead of the whole park opening for the main season on 12th March 2016.
