Making Peace

After the devastation of conflict and loss, peace is a constant process of acceptance, healing and making a future. Peace takes time and effort; it requires skill, experience and craftsmanship. It must be sculpted, moulded and remodelled.

Among the thousands of trees, monumental sculptures and inscribed plaques at the Arboretum, peace is made a thousand times over. People from around the globe come to reconcile themselves with their past and loss, and with each other. It is a place of craftsmanship as people create their own piece of reconciliation.

During the centenary year of the Armistice, four artists have been observing how visitors to the Arboretum reconcile themselves with past conflicts. Each artist has created a piece of artwork inspired by the Arboretum and the deeply personal ways that people try to make peace.
