Far Horizons- Early map-books from Lichfield Cathedral

How did Europeans view the world in 1493? What did they know about people and lands beyond their own experience? What do we know and understand about other parts of the world?

This exhibition opens with a world map published in 1493 and also displays Lichfield Cathedral Library’s collection of map-books from the 15th and 16th centuries, a time when European explorers looked beyond the horizon and journeyed to faraway places. The maps which they created on their journeys and the stories which they brought back enabled those who stayed at home to learn more about the world.
