Ticket details announced for the Staffordshire Hoard on tour at Lichfield Cathedral

Mon, 07/03/2011 - 14:15

This summer Lichfield Cathedral will host the Staffordshire Hoard on Tour from Saturday July 30th until Sunday 21st August. Free tickets, and exclusive tours, will be available from March 14th through the Lichfield Garrick Box Office.

The Staffordshire Hoard, the largest ever find of Anglo-Saxon gold, was discovered in a farmer’s field near Hammerwich, only 4 miles from Lichfield Cathedral, in 2009. The exhibition will feature over forty iconic items from including the folded cross, the biblical inscription and the seahorse, as well as some newly conserved pieces. The exhibition will be open to the general public free of charge.  It will be located in the Chapter House. The Cathedral is also pleased to announce that a special series of tours will be available at the Cathedral during this time.

Worship in the Cathedral will continue as normal as the Cathedral welcomes visitors from all over the world. Up to 12,600 visitors will experience the Hoard story during the three weeks. The exhibition will tell how the hoard was discovered, emphasising its link to the Cathedral’s own great Anglo-Saxon treasures: the Lichfield Angel and the St Chad Gospels.  Entry to the general exhibition will be free and visitor donations will help to conserve, research and display the Hoard in the future as part of the emerging Mercian trail.

Canon Pete Wilcox, Chancellor of Lichfield Cathedral commented:

“We are delighted to be bringing these exquisite pieces of Anglo-Saxon craftsmanship into a building with its roots in the Anglo-Saxon period, and to make them accessible to local people.  It will be exciting to see the hoard items alongside our own Anglo-Saxon artefacts, and to recall the extraordinary life of St Chad, who first preached the Christian Gospel in this region.  We are glad to be taking our place alongside Shire Hall in Stafford and Tamworth Castle in testing the long-term potential of the Mercian Trail. Visitors are urged to book free tickets and exclusive tours as quickly as possible, as interest is bound to be huge.”

During the exhibition, three types of tour experience will be offered:
