Anglo Saxon gold discovered near Lichfield
24/09/2009
A large amount of Anglo Saxon gold is found by a Burntwood man in a location believed to be near Lichfield - probably being the biggest finds of its type in the UK.
The find, now named Staffordshire Hoard, comprises in excess of 1,500 individual items. Most are gold, although some are silver, and many are decorated with precious stones. The quality of crafmanship displayed on the items is supreme, indicating possible royal ownership.
The items appear to date from the 7th century and although the location of the find is not revealed, it is at the heart of the former Anglo Saxon Kingdom of Mercia.
Some of the key items of the Staffordshire Hoard are due to go on display at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.
Visit the Staffordshire Hoard website for more information and a preview of some of the items.
