Local musicians hit national airwaves
26/11/09
The Darwin Ensemble Chamber Orchestra is to perform as part of Classic FM's charity Christmas Concert on Thursday 10 December, 7pm in Lichfield Cathedral, alongside Lichfield Cathedral Choir. This high profile concert, part of a series presented by Classic FM and sponsored by John Lewis, also marks DECO's first broadcast on national radio.
DECO will perform extracts from Vivaldi's Gloria and Handel's Messiah with the Cathedral Choir, as well as taking centre stage in Corelli's Christmas Concerto. The concert also features Howard Goodall, Classic FM's Composer in Residence, and his Enchanted Voices vocal group, performing the premiere performance of Howard's new Christmas works. Hosting the concert will be Classic FM "Requests" presenter Jamie Crick.
Lichfield's very own professional orchestra, DECO is the brainchild of Lichfield based violinist Alexander Laing. The orchestra recently completed its inaugural season of concerts in the Cathedral, attracting enthusiastic audiences and high acclaim from reviewers.
‘DECO delivered some cherishable moments... This was a performance of shapely string phrasing, transparent textures and luminous woodwind solos.'
(Richard Bratby, Lichfield Mercury, October 2009)
Artistic director Alex Laing said:
‘DECO are delighted to be taking part in this concert, and particularly to be reaching national radio listeners less than a year after our debut concert, whilst performing in our "home" venue in front of a Lichfield audience.'
Tickets for the concert cost £5-25, and can be obtained from the Classic FM ticket line on 0871 230 1104 or http://www.classicfm.co.uk/events/.
DECO will also perform in Lichfield Cathedral's Christmas Cracker concert on Saturday 19 December, 7.30pm, once again alongside the Cathedral Choir. Tickets for this concert of festive music are available from the Cathedral Bookshop, tel. 01543 306150.
