Lichfield Festival in full swing

The ten-day 2009 Lichfield Festival has reached the halfway point with sold out or near capacity audiences for many events, including the Opera Gala with Alfie Boe and Elin Manahan Thomas, Sandi Toksvig and the Great Voices of Bulgaria.

Highlights still to come include:

Wednesday July 15
• Ukulelescope - A second evening with The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain and their new show featuring silent film clips to which they add an hilarious soundtrack. Lichfield Garrick
• Fyfe Hutchins - the leader of pop band Guillemots appears on his own to improvise at the piano for this late night concert. Lichfield Cathedral
• Seven Elements - the fourth and final year of a Lichfield Festival commission from composer Alec Roth and librettist Vikram Seth. James Gilchrist is the tenor soloist. Lichfield Cathedral.


Thursday July 16
• Bright Orb of Harmony - part of The Sixteen's Choral Pilgrimage 2009 which takes the choir and its director Harry Christophers to the finest churches in the land. Lichfield Cathedral.
• Jeremy Hardy - One of the sharpest and funniest comedians on the circuit and a regular on BBC Radio shows like The News Quiz. Lichfield Garrick Theatre.

Friday July 17
• Jon Lord - The organist from Deep Purple has had classical chart success with his Durham Concerto. For Lichfield he brings his band and will also play the Cathedral organ. Lichfield Cathedral.
• Joe Stilgoe Trio - Richard Stilgoe's son is increasingly making his own mark with singing and jazz piano playing to impress even Michael Parkinson. Lichfield Garrick Theatre.

Saturday July 18
• City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra - Stephen Hough will be playing Tchaikovsky's second piano concerto and the programme also includes works by Ravel, Mahler and Debussy. Lichfield Cathedral.
• Moishe's Bagel - Some of Scotland's finest musicians mix up Middle Eastern music and jazz-inflected klezmer into an intoxicating blend. A great hit at last years' Edinburgh Festival. Lichfield Garrick Theatre.

Plus: Concerts by the Barbirolli Quartet the Badke Quartet, and pianist Néstor Bayona Pifarré..

Plus: Travelling Picture Show films for children, and education projects

The ten-day multi-arts festival centred around Lichfield's impressive medieval cathedral and the Lichfield Garrick Theatre features a wide range of classical, jazz, folk and world music, and includes a Georgian Market on Saturday 11 July. Festival Director is Richard Hawley.

The 2009 Lichfield Festival is supported by principal partner BMW Plant Hams Hall, Lichfield District Council and Arts Council England West Midlands.
