Roller Coaster Club of Great Britain celebrate Shockwave’s 21st birthday

One of the UK’s best loved roller coasters celebrated its 21st birthday this month with the help of theme park enthusiasts from the Roller Coaster Club of Great Britain (RCCGB).

In a weekend filled with twists and turns, the RCCGB descended upon Drayton Manor Theme Park on 4th October to take on the much-loved ride Shockwave, enjoying exclusive time on Europe’s only stand-up roller coaster.

Launched in 1994, Shockwave thrills its passengers with a series of corkscrews, loops and twists, it’s exciting and invigorating and a firm favourite of the RCCGB, which voted it the ‘Best Stand-Up Roller Coaster in the World’ when it first opened.

Over the past two decades, the ride, affectionately referred to as ‘Shock’ by staff at the family attraction, has seen over nine million guests pass through the gates, taking on the loops and thrills of the first and only coaster of its kind in Europe.

William Bryan, Managing Director at Drayton Manor said, “We’re so pleased to have the RCCGB back with us again to celebrate the ride’s 21st birthday. Shockwave is one of our best loved and longest standing roller coasters here at Drayton Manor, it has been thrilling our guests, young and young at heart, for the past 21 years and has put smiles on many faces during that time. We are sure that Shockwave will continue to delight our visitors for many years to come.”

Andy Hine MBE, Chairman and Founder of the RCCGB said: “Shockwave was part of the English Tourist Board’s, ‘Year of the Roller Coaster’ in 1994 and firmly put Drayton Manor Theme Park on the world coaster map.  As a result the RCCGB has visited Drayton Manor every year since. We voted it the ‘Best Stand-Up Roller Coaster in the World’ when it first opened and 21 years later it’s still one of the most loved rides in the group, with members coming from far and wide to experience the thrills and spills – standing up!”

Also celebrating the birthday was DJ Dan Morrisey from Free Radio who took on the Shockwave roller coaster challenge, riding the coaster 21 consecutive times!
