Roll Out The Barrel For Dad This Father’s Day!

Thursday May 26 2011

Father’s Day is always a great opportunity to say a special ‘Thank You’ to Dad’s, but finding the right gift or treat can sometimes be a real challenge.

This year, the National Brewery Centre in Burton upon Trent, can come to the rescue of anyone either scratching their heads for inspiration, or for those who simply want something that little bit different.

The historic pastime of barrel rolling – once an annual event in Burton, is to be re-introduced – the first one held nearly 80 years ago in 1933, with twelve men racing around the town centre.

Now updated to allow more variety, the competition will encompass 3 categories:

  • Men’s Singles (as per the original race format)
  • Women’s Singles and
  • Mixed Doubles

The event is open to all – groups, individuals or businesses are invited to nominate their fastest and most adept ‘rollers’! The entrance fee is just £5.00 per person for all classes. There are prizes for the winners but all entrants will be entitled to free admission around the Museum and Visitor Centre, after the event, although they may prefer to head straight to the Brewery Tap Bar & Restaurant for a reviving pint and a delicious Sunday lunch!

Afterwards, both exhausted entrants and spectating Fathers can be indulged in a unique present from either the Beer Boutique or the Museum Gift Shop – a perfect day for a perfect Dad!

Entrants can fill in the attached form, or download it from the website: and post to ‘Barrel Rolling Entries’, The National Brewery Centre, Horninglow Street, Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire, DE14 1NG.
