Lichfield Cathedral Girl Choristers
Mon, 17/09/2012 - 12:16
Lichfield Cathedral is very pleased to announce that, for the very first time, Girl Choristers will be received into the 800-year old Choral Foundation which has been singing the services in the Cathedral since 1315. This will take place at Choral Evensong on Sunday 23 September at 3.30pm. This is an occasion of great historical significance. Choirs of boys and men have sung in English cathedrals for centuries. The country’s first Cathedral Girl Choristers were established at Salisbury Cathedral 21 years ago and English cathedrals have been gradually following suit ever since.
The Very Revd Adrian Dorber, Dean of Lichfield said: “The admission of girl choristers to the historic choral foundation of the Cathedral is good news for us all. It enhances the Cathedral’s worship, which is our primary purpose.
"It also allows girls to share the educational and other benefits of being a chorister, which boys have been enjoying for centuries. I am very happy that this development is another example of our close cooperation with the Cathedral School. Together, we will enable more young people to develop their skills and talents, making them very strong candidates for good universities when the time comes to apply”.
Of course, many choirs containing girls have sung in the cathedral before now, but none of them has been a formal part of the Cathedral Foundation. Since September 2006, there has been a scholarship-based Girls’ Choir at Lichfield Cathedral School which has sung occasional services. The members of this choir will now be known as Lichfield Cathedral Girl Choristers and will sing at 5.30pm every Monday during term time, and on two weekends per term. They will also sing at the busiest periods in the year, notably Christmas and Easter.
The girls will all be music scholars attending Lichfield Cathedral School, and will sing as choristers between the ages of 10 and 15. They will then be able to progress into the Cathedral School’s prestigious Youth Choir. This will give them a wide experience of choral performance and enable them to apply for choral scholarships to universities and colleges.
It is thrilling that the girls will have this opportunity. Their experience will be different from that of the Boy Choristers, who are much younger and who board at the school, singing daily in the Cathedral. The schedule has been created for the girls in consideration of their greater age and greater academic commitments.
If you would like to find out about the possibility of someone you know becoming a Chorister, please get in touch with the admissions team at Lichfield Cathedral School on 01543 306 168. Children are invited to experience the delights of chorister life by joining in the free choral workshop days on January 12 (boys) and 26 January (girls).
