The George Hotel wins gold from the Green Tourism Business Scheme

Thursday November 10 2016

The George Hotel in Lichfield has been awarded for its commitment to excellent environmental practices in the form of an internationally recognised prestigious gold award from the Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS) after a recent inspection.

The Green Tourism Business scheme evaluates businesses in areas such as energy and water efficiency, waste management and environmentally friendly purchasing policies and it recognises companies that have taken significant steps to minimise the environmental impact of their activities.  Members of the scheme are assessed every two years and depending on the standards achieved, receive a bronze, silver or gold award.

In order to achieve their gold award, The George has introduced many energy saving measures to reduce the waste of resources and promote sustainable business practices, including installing a biomass boiler to heat the hotel more effectively and changing 80% of the bulbs to LED to reduce electricity wastage.

The Green Tourism Scheme judges were particularly impressed with The George’s in-house “Green Team” which meets on a monthly basis to share ideas and to develop further initiatives, and by the staff’s awareness of green issues generally.

Chief Executive, Angela Burns said:  “We are absolutely delighted to have been awarded gold status by the Green Tourism Business Scheme. This award recognises our staff’s genuine enthusiasm and long term commitment to reducing the hotel’s carbon footprint while still providing excellent service for our guests. We will continue to work hard to improve our environmental performance still further in the future.”
