Budding Young Bards Wanted for Staffordshire Day Poetry Competition

Friday January 27 2017

Staffordshire’s next generation of Tennysons, Byrons and Wordsworths could win a trip to Trentham Monkey Forest for their class in the first ‘I Love Staffordshire’ poetry competition.

Enjoy Staffordshire have teamed up with libraries in Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent for the contest, which is part of this year’s Staffordshire Day celebrations.

Anyone in Key Stage 2 (aged 7-11) or Key Stage 3 (11-16) can enter, as long as they live, go to school, or use a library in Staffordshire or Stoke-on-Trent.

It is hoped the competition, which runs until Friday 7th April 2017, will inspire young people to get involved with Staffordshire Day and think about what makes the county so special.

Sarah Montgomery, Chair of Enjoy Staffordshire and Managing Director of the National Memorial Arboretum, said: “As well as attracting visitors into Staffordshire, we want Staffordshire Day to be something the whole community can get behind – including our young people.

“This competition gives them a chance to show the world how much they love their county and why people should visit for short breaks and day trips.”

As well as the class trip to the Monkey Forest, prizes include Thrill Hopper passes, a £50 One4All gift card, and a workshop for the winner’s school with performance poet Giovanni Esposito, also known as Spoz.

And for every primary school pupil who enters, there will be a Drayton Manor Park Golden Ticket, which admits one child under 12 for free, when they’re accompanied by a full paying adult.

Gill Heath, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for the Libraries and Arts Service said: “Last year’s first ever Staffordshire Day was a massive success and this year we hope to make the day even bigger and better.

“We are a creative and talented county and this competition will give children a chance to shine, plus they could win a great prize for their class, and at the same time help to promote Staffordshire Day and what a wonderful county we all live in.”

Entries are to be submitted to Enjoy Staffordshire via info@enjoystaffordshire.com or handed in at the youngster’s local library before 5pm on Friday 7th April 2017. Entry forms and competition terms & conditions can be found at www.enjoystaffordshire.com/staffsday.

Judging the entries will be Staffordshire’s Poet Laureate Bert Flitcroft and Young Poet Laureate for Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Isobel Horsley, Poetry on Loan Co-ordinator Brenda Read-Brown, and Terry Heath from the Staffordshire Libraries & Arts Service.

Enjoy Staffordshire will announce the winners on their Facebook and Twitter pages on Staffordshire Day – Monday 1st May 2017.
